The painting, A Prayer for a Child, stunning in its vibrant colors and captivating in its galactic point of view, has been painted from the perspective of one child's small place in the universe.

A Prayer for a Child
From here on earth,
From my small place
I ask of You
Way out in space:
In every land
What You and I
Both understand…

Please tell all men
That Peace is Good.
That’s all
That need be understood
In every world
In Your great sky.
(We understand.
Both your and I.

Many years later a major TV advertiser offered a vast sum of money for the right to use these verses in a holiday message carrying the sponsor's tagline. Ted declined saying he didn’t want Dr. Seuss to be connected to a particular religious holiday, or a product which, if given in large doses, might have uncertain effects on children.

The disbelieving sponsor’s reaction was to substantially increase the financial offer. When Geisel refused, his agent stepped in telling Ted that his verses consisted of less than 100 words and, if he accepted the deal, he would go into the Guinness Book of Records as the writer paid the most money per word. Ted was silent for a moment and then responded, “ I’d rather be in the Guinness Book of Records as the writer who refused to be paid the most money per word.

A Prayer for a Child is now offered as a hand-pulled serigraph on canvas with an accompanying lithograph featuring Suess's 1955 poem, “A Prayer for a Child.” We look forward to speaking with you about this extraordinary collecting opportunity, certain to have a positive effect on children and adults of all ages.

← Back to New Releases

Seuss text and characters © Dr. Seuss Enterprises, L.P. 2008.
